I have a cockatiel who is almost 8. He gets the premium cockatiel seed mix from the bird farm (fresh and natural) and i have some sort of liquid vitamin that I add to his water sometimes. he often eats breakfast with me and loves cereal and my apple cores but I am interested in suggestions. he is a very picky eater when it comes to new foods.
Don’t feed your cockatiel apple cores. They are toxic to cockatiels and all other pet birds. In addition, I’d stop giving your cockatiel the liquid vitamins. Liquid vitamins tend to attract bacteria which can be harmful for your cockatiel. Only give your cockatiel vitamins if advised to do so by an avian vet. A cockatiel can get too much of certain vitamins and that can make it ill.
Now to the food: Fruits, veggies, hard-boiled eggs, walnuts, almonds, unsalted pumpkin seeds, are all good for cockatiels. Some fruits cockaitels will enjoy are pears, apples (no cores), bananas, cantaloupe, apricots, peaches, grapes, and watermelon. Avoid giving your cockatiel the pits of any fruits. They are toxic. Veggies: Broccoli, sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach, squash, yams, romaine lettuce, dandelion greens, and sprouted seeds.
Make sure all food is fresh and thoroughly washed. Serve anything cooked at room temperature.
More foods you want to avoid are chocolate, avocado, caffiene, rhubarb, mushrooms, onions, nutmeg, and high-salt foods. They are all toxic to cockatiels and other pet birds.
